Notes:
Based on the story of Tu and his wife Rei. They went out to dive for pā’ua (clams). Rei went down first. She hadn’t been gone for long before a woman like Rei got in the back of the canoe. Tu mistook her for his wife and, at her suggestion, paddled to shore. Meanwhile, Rei came up from her dive and shouted to Tu, saying that the woman in the canoe was not her but Tuoropunga. But Tu didn’t take any notice. When the canoe reached shore, Tu still believed that Tuoropunga was his wife. Rei had been pregnant but when Tuoropunga did not give birth they quarrelled and Tu threw her in the fire. She burst, and all that remained in the fire was a rock.
