Notes:
The story of two ariki: Hiro, who was the chief of Rangiroa, and Hua, chief of Te Mahu, districts in the village of Omoka. Hiro sent his son Tautu to take a fish to Hua but he ate it on the way. Hua became angry and killed Tautu. He then sent a message to Hiro, telling him he had eaten his son.Hiro asked the messenger “What did Tautu taste like?” The reply was that his flesh was salty but his bones were tender. There followed a war between the two men.
The turtle, the shark and the urua (trevally) are sacred fish in Penrhyn. The head of the shark must be given to the ariki. The turtle and the urua are eaten only by the king.
